Overview

UM Racing was founded in 2012 by a small group of University of Malta students who shared the dream of representing Malta in Formula Student. With no prior team, car, or infrastructure, they began by building a workshop from the ground up, sourcing tools, and establishing sponsor relationships, all while learning how to design and manufacture a race car from scratch.
Our Cars
FC14

The first ever race car was the FC14. The FC14 was the car that started everything and showcased that UM Racing could build a rule-compliant Formula Student race car. This car was powered by a naturally aspirated Honda CBR600.
FC15

With experience gained, the team quickly developed the FC15, an evolution of the FC14. Similarly to the FC14, the FC15 also had a Honda CBR600, however it was better tuned to deliver more performance, which complimented other improvements such as having less weight and a better centre of gravity, making it a lighter, more agile car. Competing again in Italy, the FC15 faced a stronger field but still achieved a solid 29th place out of 77 teams. The improvement reflected better design decisions, material choices, and performance tuning.
FC17

The third car produced by the team was the FC17. The FC17 is the first and only UM Racing car to feature a turbocharged engine. The FC17 continued to increase performance thanks to its Kawasaki ZXR engine. The FC17 competed both at FS Italy 2017 and FS UK 2018.
FC20

Our Final ICE car is the now iconic FC20, which is the lightest, fastest, and most reliable car. The FC20 features various innovations such as a paddle shift gearbox. The FC20 weighs 218kg and, thanks to its Yamaha MT07 engine, it can achieve a 0–100kph run in 4.5 seconds.
EV24

The EV24 is our latest and current car. This is our first EV car in response to the competition and our continued strive for innovation. Our new race car is designed and based around an Emrax 228 motor which has over 100 horsepower
Our Milestones
FC14- Our First Milestone

After two years of intensive learning and development, UM Racing launched its first race car, the FC14, and competed at Formula Student Italy. Despite being a newcomer, the team secured an impressive 23rd place finish, proving its potential on the international stage.
FC17 AT FSUK 18-

The team upgraded the car and entered Formula Student UK at Silverstone. This marked the first time UM Racing competed in two events with the same car. The team achieved a major milestone: completing the Endurance event for the first time, something only 19 teams out of 81 managed that year. UM Racing finished 29th overall, cementing its place among strong international competitors.
The FC17 led to the team learning various lessons which were utilised in the design of the FC20
FSUK2022

After the unveiling of the FC20, UM racing had high hopes and had set multiple goals hoping to complete all dynamic events for the first time and to finish in the top 25.
By the end of the competition, the endurance test, being the longest and most demanding part of the competition, was the only test left. However, despite the test’s difficulties, the car performed flawlessly and for the first time ever in team history, UM Racing had officially completed all dynamic events in the competition.
But the achievement didn’t stop there as we won the Endurance event, beating dozens of well-established international teams and even finishing 3rd place overall out of 111 teams. Our story quickly spread through national media, establishing a sense of pride, and serving as a turning point in our team’s journey.
FSUK25- UM’s First Electric Vehicle

The EV24 is the first electric vehicle ever designed and built in Malta which is a national milestone and a major leap for UM Racing. The project began with a full year of design, followed by manufacturing throughout 2023–2024.
We debuted EV24 at FSUK 2024, but a last-minute technical issue prevented us from competing in the dynamic events. Disappointed but motivated, we committed to returning stronger in 2025.
From that moment on, it was all hands-on deck. After a year of intense improvement, we arrived at FSUK 2025 with one goal: to drive. We left with a 9th place overall finish out of 60 teams, an extraordinary result that marked Malta’s first electric vehicle, both competing and succeeding on the international stage.
A standout achievement was passing scrutineering on our first attempt, including our most complex component: the battery pack. Many teams spend years reaching this point, we did it on our first try.
While weather delays prevented us from entering all dynamic events, we completed the Sprint with a solid 1:02 lap, even after quickly resolving a technical issue mid run. Then came the 22 km Endurance race, which we completed smoothly, creating a surreal and emotional milestone for the entire team.
We are incredibly grateful to the Maltese community for your support and to our sponsors, whose trust and commitment made this journey possible. Together, history has been made however there is still more to achieve.
