Our Project
This is our most ambitious project to date. This will not only be our first ever electric race car, but it will be the first ever Maltese built electric race car. We are not being overly ambitious with the design of this new race car as we are entering into unknown territory. We are using similar vehicle characteristics to our current FC20 in order to well and truly understand the changes arising from our switch to an electric powertrain.
Our new electric project. Why?
After our success at Formula Student UK 2022, it is time for a new era in UM Racing history. The team will stop designing and manufacturing cars that are powered by internal combustion engines.
Our new race car will be based around an Emrax 208 motor which has over 100 horsepower.
This is an exciting new era for UM Racing, with an electric powertrain, high voltage electric components, safety systems and various electrical systems.
We feel that the time is right for this project as we have maximized our opportunities with internal combustion race cars and as the technology has improved, the performance arising from electric vehicles is also on the rise.
In fact, this is a conscious decision taken by UM Racing to increase performance from its race cars. Most Formula Student tracks are short and tight. Therefore, good acceleration is necessary, something that is more easily obtained from the torque of an EV motor. In fact, UM Racing is now in the initial design stage of the new EV race car.
The Motivating Factors
As formula student competitions and the automotive industry are moving towards electrification, we feel that this is the ideal time to make the jump to racing electric cars. Not only do we not want to be left behind by competitors who make this switch before us, we also are confident that we can build faster race cars if they are electric. For instance, thanks to the electric motor, we can enjoy a 40 horsepower increase, which on such light cars, is a very significant amount.
We are embarking on this project with a positive and open mindset to ensure that we take the correct decisions when designing this new race car. We have a group of highly motivated and highly talented electrical engineers that have certainly made the decision to switch to electric much easier. This is the case as it means that we have knowledgeable team members that we can rely on and can provide the necessary expertise to the take the correct decisions on the development of this all new race car.
