What is a Formula Student car?
Formula Student cars are formula style single seater race cars. Since Formula Student tracks are short and tight, good acceleration and braking are a must. Therefore, vehicle dynamics and a good suspension set up help increase our performance. All in all, our race car must have a good design so that all components that make up the car operate as one.
Additionally, we also make sure that our cars are as light by using the lightest materials possible without sacrificing performance such as Carbon Fibre.
In total, a Formula Student car is made up of around 75,000 individual components, which have to be integrated in a way that complies with the Formula Student rules. The rules document ensures that our team is pushed to the limit to produce an agile, light, reliable and ultimately, fast car.
Over the team’s decade of existence, four different race cars have been built.
Our cars
FC14
The first ever race car that started everything and showcased that UM Racing was capable of building a rule compliant Formula Student race car. This car was powered by a naturally aspirated Honda CBR600.
FC15
This car was an evolution of the FC14 where it also featured a Honda CBR600 but was better tuned to deliver more performance to the car. This complemented other improvements in the car such as having less weight and a better centre of gravity.
FC17
The third car produced by the team and the first and only UM Racing car to feature a turbocharged engine. This car continued to increase performance thanks to its Kawasaki ZXR engine and at the time was the most reliable UM Racing car which lead the team to learn various lessons which were utilised in the design of the next car.
FC20
Our latest car is the lightest, fastest and most reliable car. It features various innovations such as a paddle shift gearbox and weighs 218kg. Thanks to its Yamaha MT07 engine it is capable of achieving a 0 – 100kph run in 4.5 seconds.
